The Portland Industrial-Goth Mailing List

The pdxindgoth list (AKA PIG list) is a bunch of people living in the Portland area interested in all things Goth and Industrial related. (It's neat how that's all summarized in the list name based on the name, eh?)

Access is open to all, as long as you can avoid being a dick. Archives are private.

                           THE PIG FAQ
                               AND
                        NETIQUETTE GUIDE

Greetings, and welcome to the PIG list .

The pdxindgoth (aka. PIG) list has been in existence since 1996,
when it was created by Evil Scott because the CC list Cedric was
using got too big. It's been through a couple address and
owner changes since then, and is now managled by Darrell Fuhriman
 who also wrote this FAQ.

FAQS:

1) How do I subscribe?

   You can subscribe at .

2) How do I unsubscribe?

Why did you post this to the list? You got on the list, didn't
you? Did it occur to you to do just the opposite of what you
did to get on? Did you not notice the note telling you how to
get off at the bottom of every single message that goes to the
list? If you didn't notice it there, perhaps you noticed that
it was also included in the headers of every single message
   that goes to the list?

3) Hey! Why aren't you talking about music and nothing but
music? Isn't this a music list?

Well, yes it is. It's also a bunch of people who have more
than one interest, and many people who happen to know each
other. Think of it more like a bunch of friends and
acquaintances hanging out together -- and you'll find that
folks do hang out a lot in real life, too.

4) So, what's off-topic?

Well, nothing really, just try not to get too carried away
   with it.

5) Cool! Did you know that ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US?

Yes, we heard. About a billion times. Did you really need to
   tell us again?

6) Oh, sorry.

   You should be.

7) Well, I was forwarded this other cool website...

Stop it! Just because I said that nothing was really
off-topic doesn't mean you should send us everything that pops
into your brain or your inbox.

8) Is there a website for the list?

Why yes, there is. It's at .

The website uses an automated events listing system that all
subscribers to the PIG list are allowed to make changes to.
If you are aware of an event that is not posted on the website
already, feel free to go to http://events.pdxindgoth.com and
   add it.

If you have any questions or comments about the events area of
the website, please direct them to webmaster@pdxindgoth.com.
*Note* this is not the same person as the mailing-list admin.
Try not to get them confused, as it annoys them.

9) I just subscribed everyone to my mailing-list so they can get
my announcements! Wasn't that nice of me?

No, that was damn rude, in fact. It's not acceptable to use
people's e-mail addresses in that manner. You're welcome to
send an announcement to the PIG list telling of your list's
existence, but it is absolutely NOT OK to sign people up to
lists they did not ask to be on. If you do so, and I (the
list owner) find out. I will remove you from the list, and
complain to your ISP, hopefully getting your account removed
and your list shut off. And we don't want that now, do we?

Besides, there's already an automated system for that. See
   question (8).

10) This FAQ sucks!

That's not a question. But, if you have suggestions, please
   let me know.

11) Anything else I should know?

How nice of you to ask! Most people don't even bother to
ask. You've taken your first to behaving like a responsible
   net.adult.

Here are some suggestions that will make your stay on the PIG
   list much more enjoyable.

   a) Think before you post. This can't be repeated often
enough. You'll find that most folks who make useful
contributions to the list will tell you that they wait a while
before sending each post, often going back to edit their posts
several times before sending them. You'll also find that most
of them don't even send most of the e-mails they compose, even
   after going through this process.

   b) Trim your posts when replying. You want to leave just
enough in that others know what you were replying to, but not
so much that they have to read more than is necessary. There
are few things more annoying than someone quoting an entire
long message, only to add "me too" at the bottom. Only
slightly less annoying is someone saying "me too" at the top
   of an entire long message.

A good rule of thumb is that if you have included more lines
that you have added yourself, you need to trim some more!

There's a more detailed discussion here, which is very good.
Save yourself some trouble and read it.

   c) Make sure you're not posting in all HTML. Unfortunately
some mail readers see fit to make this the default behavior.
   Turn it off!

   d) Trim your posts when replying.

   e) Run your post through a spell checker. Nearly every mail
reader made in the last 10 years can do that. Not bothering
to spell correctly makes you look dumb, and shows disrespect
for the people on the list.

Besides, if you don't, Cedric's likely to flame you and we
   don't need to encourage him.

   f) Did I mention that you should trim your posts?

   g) It's always a good idea to read for a while before
posting. It lets you get a feel for things. It's also good
idea to read the archives, which are available to you at the
   list URL listed above.

   h) Oh yah, one more thing. Don't forget to trim your posts!

OK, that's all.

Welcome to the PIG list. Enjoy!
